Reflexões sobre o Sr. Pessoa

WHAT is the self? I cried./Come, show me where it lives./What is the coin it gives/ to buy my fratricide?

I know that I have brothers/who shyly haunt my dwelling/como whwn there's no foretelling/ depart to solace others:

and sometimes they and I/exchange our names and faces/ and walk familiar places/ under a changing sky.

One self would keep me tethered/chewing one cud of dreams/ forgetting the wild moon - beams/ ans storms that I have weathered.

Construct a thick-walled tower/and seal it with a name/the tower will stay the same/ but the name lose its power.

Be singular, be one/deny the spirit's flowing/in dying or in growing/ brook no companion

and find when night comes down/you journeyed round and round/ a barren patch of ground/ not moved through fied and town.

The poet eyed the key/that turned in the self's door/eyed ceiling, walls and floor/askance, distrustfully

wanting no final choice/of mask or diagram/no sealed-in 'this I am':/ needing his plural voice.
